Europe Cruise Regions
The European cruise itineraries we plan: Mediterranean, Northern Europe & Baltic, British Isles, Norwegian Fjords, and the great rivers.
Europe covers more cruise ground than any other part of the world we plan — a Mediterranean big-ship week, a small-ship run through the Norwegian Fjords, and a river cruise on the Danube are three completely different trips. This guide is a starting map: the regions, the seasons that work best, and the kinds of travelers each one tends to fit.
European cruise regions.
A quick map of the itinerary groupings you'll see across ocean and river.
Ocean cruising
Mediterranean
The widest range of itineraries in Europe. Western routes cover Spain, France, and Italy; eastern routes reach Greece, Croatia, and Turkey. Peak season is late spring through early fall.
Ocean cruising
Northern Europe & Baltic
Summer sailings out of Copenhagen, Stockholm, or Southampton with long daylight hours. Capitals like Copenhagen, Stockholm, Helsinki, and Tallinn on a single loop.
Ocean cruising
British Isles
Round-Britain and Ireland itineraries with stops in Dublin, Cork, Belfast, and the Scottish coast. A good pairing for a London or Edinburgh land stay on either end.
Ocean cruising
Norwegian Fjords
Short and long sailings from the UK or continental Europe into Geiranger, Flåm, and Bergen. Best from May through August for daylight and settled weather.
River cruising
Danube, Rhine, Douro, Rhône & Seine
Small-ship itineraries through central and western Europe. One unpacking, walkable ports each day, and included excursions — a different product from ocean cruising.
